Ban Pa Pong Piang is a Karen hill tribe village inside Doi Inthanon National Park, in the Mae Chaem area, known for some of the most dramatic rice terraces in Thailand.
The village sits 121 km from Chiang Mai, about two and a half hours by road. Life here is simple and traditional: families farm the terraces by hand and the hillsides change colour with the rice through the year.
Planting begins in July, when the paddies fill with water and the young rice turns the valley bright green. By October the fields turn gold, and the harvest comes in November. After the harvest the village is quieter, the air is cool, and the sunsets are clear through February.
Homestays in the village are local family houses with limited electricity, often solar or candlelight. Most hosts speak Thai or Karen only, which is why we arrange stays for visitors.
